Extending the longest war

The US is planning to maroon thousands of troops in Afghanistan ‘after the longest war is finally over’ in 2014. Why? Officially, the answer is that these men and women will ‘train the Afghan police’ though Afghan officers have a habit of leaving the police force and, with their weapons, joining the Taliban. On the way they may add to the green on blue casualty count.
In Afghanistan, my interpreter said ‘You people will one day leave. The Taliban will be here for ever. What choice do you think I will make?’
Perhaps these ‘after the war’ troops will assuage President Obama’s loss of yet another high-tech war. But many of these ‘unwarlike ¬†troops’ will die on the Afghan field.
The President is paying a high price, in blood and treasure, to soothe his, and the country’s, pride.
